Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a form of therapy. There are many misconceptions about hypnotherapy which mainly comes from stage hypnosis. Just remember that stage hypnosis is just a stage show and has very little bearing on how a therapy session works.
Hypnotherapy can help you to stop smoking, lose weight, release anxiety and panic attacks or change your mindset.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is seen by many who have never experienced it to be some kind of dark magical art. It is perceived as a state where you are being fully controlled by the hypnotist and that you will do anything that they say.
This is a really poor representation of hypnosis and comes from the stage as I mentioned earlier.
The best way that I can describe hypnosis to you is that it feels like a daydream. You are aware of you know where you are and what is happening around you but you don't pay it any attention. My hypnotherapy clients in Leeds tell me that they can hear my voice and they know that they could open their eyes if they wanted to but they don't want to as they feel so good being in hypnosis.
Whilst you are in hypnosis your subconscious mind becomes more open to suggestion but I am only able to give you positive suggestions that are good for you. If I tried to make you do something that would cause harm to you or break your core values your conscious mind would kick straight back in and your subconscious mind wouldn't receive any more suggestions from me. Your conscious mind is kind of like a gatekeeper, protecting you.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy, as I said earlier, is the use of hypnosis as a form of therapy. I don't put anyone into hypnosis and I can only say things to you that are of benefit to you. In your initial consultation we will talk about how you can use hypnotherapy to help with what you want to work on. When you are having your hypnotherapy session I will help you to go into hypnosis and then start working on the issue you have come to see me about.
I use hypnotherapy in a combination of picking up intuitively what you need combined with information that you have told me. This then gives you the best of both worlds as you have a plan combined with the ability to change course if needed.

Whilst you are in hypnosis you will hear me talking to you but you won't always be listening to what I am saying. This is because your conscious mind doesn't have a role in hypnosis so it will wander into it's own thoughts. One moment you will be listening to every word I'm saying and the next you will have drifted off and be thinking about something else.
This is a normal part of a hypnotherapy session as I am talking to your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is the part that is always listening in the background. For instance, if you are in a bar and you hear someone say your name but they are not talking to you or about you, your subconscious mind picks up on it and tells your conscious mind to start listening. Hypnotherapy is working solely with the subconscious mind.

What Can Hypnotherapy Be Used For?

While hypnotherapy is often thought of as a way to treat weight issues or overcome fears, the reality is that it can be used for a whole range of issues. From post-traumatic stress disorder to relationship issues, there are many areas where clinical hypnotherapy can help.

Clinical hypnotherapy is a type of therapy that uses hypnosis, or a trance-like state, to treat various conditions. Although it is often associated with stage shows and magicians, hypnotherapy is a serious and effective treatment option for a variety of issues.

Weight management, post-traumatic stress disorder, and even pain management. In fact, clinical studies have shown that hypnosis can be an effective weight loss tool. One study found that participants who underwent hypnosis lost significantly more weight than those who did not.

And while hypnosis cannot cure post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it can help lessen the symptoms. A study of war veterans found that those who received hypnotherapy had fewer nightmares and flashbacks than those who did not. Hypnotherapy is also an effective pain management tool. A study of cancer patients found that those who received hypnotherapy had less pain and anxiety than those who did not.

Some people even use it as a way to boost their confidence or performance levels. You may have also heard of hypnotherapy being used for past life regression. Past life regression is very popular for those wishing to find answers that they have been struggling with.

Essentially, hypnotherapy is a way of harnessing the power of the mind to change habits or thought patterns. While it's not suitable for everyone, for some people it can be an extremely effective tool.

If you are struggling with an issue, whether it be weight management by using weight loss hypnotherapy, PTSD, or pain management, consider talking to a therapist about hypnotherapy. It may be just what you need to help you overcome your problem.
